Oral Hygiene

oral hygiene with Trapnell OrthodonticsOnce your braces are in place, it’s more important than ever that you maintain excellent oral hygiene. Wires and brackets can cause food to become trapped in your mouth, which can result in dental issues.

At Trapnell Orthodontics, we provide you with the knowledge to help keep your mouth happy and healthy. We will do our best to provide you with instructions for good hygiene during your orthodontic treatment.

Careful brushing and flossing remain two of the very best tools to help you fight tooth decay and maintain good oral health.

Some of the other tools we suggest for maintaining good oral health during your orthodontic treatment are:

  • Interdental Toothbrush | An interdental toothbrush (known as a Proxabrush) can be used to clean around and under your braces. Using a Proxabrush gently, you can avoid damaging the wires of your braces and help keep your mouth clean. A Proxabrush is a wonderful tool that can truly help you keep your braces clean and your teeth and gums healthy.
  • Antibacterial Mouthwash | We offer a special hydrogen peroxide, antiseptic mouth rinse called Peroxyl. Peroxyl can prevent infections and helps decrease the irritation that often comes with orthodontic treatment. Peroxyl can be used up to four times a day, based on when you’re brushing (generally after meals, school, or work, and before bed).
  • Topical Fluoride | We offer a sodium fluoride gel called Phos-Flur that helps prevent tooth decay while you’re wearing your braces. Phos-Flur kills bacteria and helps replace minerals in your teeth. Phos-Flur takes about 30 minutes each time you use it and is an excellent option to help keep your teeth healthy.
  • Instructions for Cleaning Your Removable Appliance | If you have a removable appliance (such as a retainer), we recommend that you clean it as often as you would normally brush your teeth. We can provide you with instructions on how to best clean your appliance.
